Revolution Superfruit Extract Review – Skincare + Primer?!

Hey, pretty people!

Ever since Revolution launched their skincare line, I have been dying to try some products out. I picked up a few items with my last orders with BeautyBay and Revolution, the Superfruit Extract among them.

Even though I had a bittersweet experience with the 10% Niacinamide + 1% Zinc serum (review here), I decided to try my luck with the antioxidant rich serum & primer.

I have to admit it, the fact that Tammy recommended it so much played a big role in it, and sincerly hoped this item would work as well on me.

How’d it go?

Let’s find out!

PACKAGING

Revolution Superfruit Extract Review - Skincare + Primer?!Let’s be real for a moment: this packaging is probably the most aesthetically pleasing one of the whole skincare range.

The bottle comes in a wonderful holographic purple cardboard packaging that is a little bulky, but come on: look how cute it is. The black writings pop perfectly on it, you can perfectly see the different ingredients and directions.Revolution Superfruit Extract Review - Skincare + Primer?!

Overall, the outer packaging gives off really luxurious vibes considering it’s a drugstore product, especially aesthetically-speaking.

The actual bottle, on the other hand, is not as exiciting – which, to be fair, is to be expected.

I really like the frosted glass effect both on touch and aesthetics, and it pairs quite well with the metallic, holographic sticker. Also, the sticker complements the outer cardboard packaging very well, and I am very into it.

The applicator, despite being a basic one, has a rose gold detail that not only complements the general aesthetics of the item, but also brings it out of the more ‘basic’ zone.

FORMULATION + APPLICATION – AS A SKINCARE SUPPLEMENT

Since this product can be used both as a skincare serum and as a makeup primer, we are going to take two separate looks at these claims.

As we mentioned before, you can find all the infos about the item on the outer packaging, which suggests to use this serum in the morning and night after water-based serums.

To me, this means applying it after toning and applying my Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% by TheOrdinary and right before my moisturizer.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Revolution Superfruit Extract Review - Skincare + Primer?!
IRL you can also see a little bit of green in all that pink

Upon applying it for the first time, I noticed that the formula is fairly water-y and slides down the face very quickly. This is neither a negative nor positive aspect in my opinion, but it does mean you have to be quick when massaging it into the skin.

Two drops are more than enough to cover your whole face (believe me, my face is pretty huge), and the rest you could gently use it on areas like your forehead or chin.

THE SCENT

The sweet, fruit-y smell of this serum is quite strong but not unpleasant in my opinion, and it reaches its peak once you start blending it into the skin.

Moreover, the Superfruit Extract also has a nice redd-ish/green-ish/pink-ish sheen that dissolves itself almost immediately, leaving you with a pleasant dewy look.

SKIN TYPES

Of course, this product is best suited for combo to dry skin types, but fear not! I have a combination to oily skin type, and must say that this little guy worked wonderfully for me.

I used it right before my moisturizer, and it did not mess with my oil production throughout the day. Honestly, I won’t go as far as to say that I did not get oily; of course I did, but it wasn’t anything worse (or better) than my everyday oil production.

NIGHT-TIME APPLICATION

When I applied it at night, after my complete skincare routine, I woke up with very nice results. It wasn’t anything absolutely ground-breaking, but it’s fair to say that I did not expect these results after one application (well two, if you consider the day-time one).

My skin looked visibly more replenished, and a lot smoother – especially on my forehead and cheekbones. I am not talking about smaller pores or reduced acne, but from a texture standpoint the difference was clearly tangible. Also, I still had the tiniest bit of dewyness going on, and I have to admit that I did not mind the glow one bit.

All things considered, I feel like I would customize the use of this serum as a skincare supplement. Two times a day seems like a little bit much to me, but as a part of my nighttime routine (which is a lot more inclusive and complete) is the perfect solution for me.

FORMULATION + APPLICATION – AS A MAKEUP PRIMER

We have established that this formulation offers a dewy finish, but how will this act as an actual makeup primer?

THE TACKY ELEMENT

One thing we haven’t mentioned before is that this product tends to get tacky as soon as it is absorbed. This is not only perfect to grab your moisturizer if it’s used as a skincare serum, but absolutely amazing as a primer. The sticky consistency will grab any ounce of foundation like its life depends on it, which honestly is something I love in a primer.

As you can see, once the product is blended in it loses a bit of its glow

I feel like this pimer was a valuable asset when it came to extend and preserve the life of my makeup, but I do have a few clarifications to make.

ON COMBO TO OILY SKIN

Like I said before I have a combination to oily skin type, with my T-zone being the most critical part of my face – immediately followed by my cheeks and chin. I didn’t do a proper preparation with a mattifying balm or something of the sort, but only applied the Superfruit Extract and then went straight into foundation.

WITH FOUNDATION ON

I decided to go for Revolution’s ‘Matte Base’ foundation (I use shade F1) and proceeded with my regular routine, which only involved the RCMA ‘No-Color Powder’ as a setting powder.

Just like I stated in the foundation review (which you can find here) the formula does a pretty good job preserving itself and not cracking under the oils, and I can’t really say anything more than I said in the review.

My face started getting oily at about the 6th hour mark, which was pretty impressive considering the ‘poor’ preparation I did.

If the formula cracked before, it sure didn’t this time. It did get oily, I will give you that, but my face was very much intact at the end of the day.

I find myself reaching for this primer on the daily now, even to use by itself without further prepping and setting. If you’re into tacky primers, you are most definitely going to love this one.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Per usual, here we are. All in all, would I recommend the Revolution Superfruit Extract? Hell yeah!

I was quite skeptical going into this because of the bittersweet experience I had with the Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%, but this product was a woderful experience from start to finish.

Personally, I feel like as most things it’s all about finding your perfect application method/frequency. I love this serum as a skincare supplement, but prefer to implement it only at nighttime. Its priming function is also quite appealing, but I would probably need something more to keep the oils at bay for times when I am not using my trusty Matte Base.

The price is also nice, even though it is a little bit on the higher side when it comes to Revolution standards. Fr an average quantity of 30 ml, however, and the overall quality of the product are definitely worth it.
