Hey, pretty people!

For the fifth chapter of The Fashion Journal, we are going to dive even deeper into the Academia trend. This time around, however, we are going to examine one of the most underrated subgenres: Art Academia.

This trend emerged quite recently, but wasn’t able to gain the same popularity as Dark and Light Academia. The main reason for that is because it highly customizable according to your likings.

Art Academia mainly focuses on Visual arts, sketching and painting are the most popular ones. However, I must say that sculpting has been gaining more and more popularity.

Compared to Light and Dark Academia, this style is a lot more comfortable and relaxed, although it still preserves its layer of ‘austerity’.

In this fifth chapter of The Fashion Journal, we are going to examine the pieces, colors and outfits that better represent this style. Moreover, I am going to give you 10 outfits inspo to create your own ones. These are just general ideas, feel free to customize every single detail according to your likings.

So, are you finally ready to find out how to copy Art Academia aesthetics and outfits?

Let’s get started!

THE ITEMS

Let’s kick off this chapter talking about the more general aspects of the trend, shall we?

The general idea is to have everything look and feel comfortable, flowy even. Oversized pieces are a big yes when it comes to Art Academia, but that doesn’t mean you should only stick to those. The comfortable aspect doesn’t only translate to ‘oversize’, so don’t feel troubled if you aren’t a fan of that.

MUST HAVES

Something that is definitely a must whenever you are assembling an outfit: pockets.

Pockets are one of the most important aspects when it comes to Art Academia, and have to be a recurrent theme in the outfits; the bigger the pockets, the better the outfits will look.

The idea is to carry many things with you – like brushes and stuff. Even if you don’t really have brushes to carry around, pockets are still incredibly important to capture the aesthetic of the style.

ACCESSORIES

Stepping slightly away from the actual clothes, let’s talk about shoes and accessories. If they weren’t as important in Light and Dark Academia, they become central in Art Academia.

Berets are definitely one of the most distinctive traits, and are almost always an active part of whichever outfit. They are incredibly stylish, and certainly convey the idea of art.

SHOES

When it comes to shoes, Oxfords are, of course, one of the most popular choices. They are quite stylish, and still manage to mantain a comfortable fit. Of couse, you should pick whichever pair of shoes that you feel comfortable with, and don’t restrict to only those!

THE OUTFITS

Like we said before, the keyword of the entire Art Academia style is ‘comfort’. Everything is meant to look and feel comfortable, from head to toe.

OLD-SCHOOL

Another aspect to take into consideration is the old-school look and feeling this trend has. Everything seems to have a ‘retro’ vibe to it, and almost seems to look worn-out. I don’t mean to say the items should be ragged or anything, but they should definitely have a vintage vibe to them.

The comfortable aspect becomes even more relevant when trying to assemble an outfit. Everything is meant to be taken off quickly and easily – having ripped items wouldn’t exactly complement the look.

POPULAR PAIRINGS

The most popular pairing includes pants with a button down shirt, and a sweater or blazer on top; as long as the pieces are easy to remove and comfortable to wear, you’re good to go.

Especially with sweaters, you certainly want to go at least a size up. This will create a magnificent comfortable effect, and will act as the cherry on top of your outfit.

ACCESSORIES – AGAIN

Lastly, I would just like to spend a few words on accessories. They are definitely a must, and you want to consider adding them to your outfit if you want to create the perfect Art Academia style.

Berets are the most common choice, and you should consider investing into one of them sooner or later. Also, a work bag is be another item you should consider investing in. The most used ones are definitely satchels and messengers, but feel free to pick whichever feels better for you.

THE COLORS

When we talked about Dark and Light Academia, we had a particular color range to stick to. There were even specific patterns and designs to stick to. This time around, however, we have much more room to play – or a little bit more, at least.

BUILDING THE PALETTE

In fact, this style highly favours earthy tones and darker hues in general. The richness in the colors is a general guideline, but you can easily create your own palette by taking inspiration from a specific practice or artistic period.

For example, let’s say you wanted pen or pencil sketches to be your main aesthetic. In this case, your fashion palette would consist mainly of black and white. As you have probably guessed, the same reasoning should be applied to any other technique or period you were interested in. Impressionism, Art Déco and so on.

GENERALLY

In general, besides richer hues, other important shades to take in consideration when assembling your outfits are black, white, brown and cadmium yellow.

10 KEY ITEMS YOU SHOULD OWN

Lastly, we are going to talk about the ten items you should consider investing in to create your Art Academia aesthetic.

Of course, none of the principles stated in this chapter are to be taken as holy grails. You should definitely apply your own personal sense of fashion into your outfits! Moreover, feel free to accessorize as much or as little as you prefer.

  • Black beret
  • Black pants
  • White shirt
  • Brown overalls
  • Yellow sweater
  • Green sweater
  • Black coat
  • Light overtops
  • Oxfords
  • Messenger bag
