Hey, pretty people!

I am not too sure which fragrances are in your perfume collection; however, I am sure that at least once you have wondered why certain scents last longer than others – even if they come from the same brand.

This is a fairly simple question, yet one we don’t always have an answer to. How can we choose the best product if we’re not too sure on what it is that makes it special?

Well, this article is here to give you a hand!

I have decided to pile up all the infos I know about different perfume types, so I can (hopefully) help you pick the right one for you.

When it comes to a perfume’s longevity, it all boils down to one thing: concentration. The different concentration percentages determine the strength of your scent, as well as how long it’s going to last.

It may seem pretty complicated at first, but I promise it’s actually a lot easier than it seems. You’ll soon be able to recognize the different types of fragrances without batting an eye, I assure you that!

So, are you ready to find out how you can choose the right fragrance type?

Let’s get started!

PARFUM

The very top of the pyramid, Parfum is what we commonly recognize as Perfume.

It’s the strongest type of fragrance you can find, and can be the most expensive one as well. Why is it the strongest and heaviest, you may ask? It’s all because it has the highest concentration percentage.

In fact, Parfum’s concentration of fragrance ranges between 15% and 40%, which is the highest one of all perfume types. The International Fragrance Association (IFRA) says that 20% is to most common concentration for this type of perfume.

Its longevity can range between 6 and 8 hours.

ESPRIT DE PARFUM

This is more of a honorable mention, since it’s a pretty rare and uncommon type of fragrance to find!

Made famous by Dior, who in the 1980s made their ‘Poison’ fragrance with, Esprit de Parfum has a concentration between 15% and 30%. If you’re curious about this specific fragrance, you can find more info on it here!

Like I said before, quite a rare one to come by, but still a pleasurable type to enjoy. This lowkey sounds like something you’d read on Tinder, so let’s move on.

EAU DE PARFUM (EDP)

Also called Parfum de Toilette (PDT), Eau de Parfum sits just under Parfum, and is the second most long-lasting type of perfume you’ll ever try.

Its aromatic compounds concentration varies between 10% and 20%, but usually sits at a comfortable 15%. Probably the most common and famous type of the bunch, you probably own at least one of these.

Its longevity can range between 5 to 6 hours.

EAU DE TOILETTE (EDT)

Along with the Eau de Parfum, this is another incredibly popular type of perfume you can currently find on the market.

Among all of these concentrations, this one is the most common. It oscillates between 5% and 15%, although it most commonly perches at 10%. This is the standard for cheaper perfumes, although they’re a lot less heavy and strong than the previous variants.

Its longevity can go from 4 to 5 hours tops.

EAU DE COLOGNE (EDC)

It owes its name to the city of Köln (Cologne), Germany, when it was invented in 1709. It immediately took root in the royalty scene, and soon it became standard practice for apothecaries and pharmacies in Europe to craft their own.

Eau de Cologne presents a very low concentration of aromatic compounds; 3% to 8%.

Since it has such a small concentration, its longevity is also quite short; barely 2-3 hours.

PERFUME MIST

Once again, allow me to offer you an honorable mention. It’s Perfume Mist, also known as Brume de Parfum, Voile de Parfum, Eau Parfumée, or Eau Sans Alcohol.

This type of fragrance sits on the same level as Eau de Cologne, as it presents the same exact concentration levels (3%-8%). However, as the french name ‘Eau Sans Alcohol’ suggests, it is completely alcohol-free.

It’s very light and airy, and will only last a couple of hours tops.

EAU FRAÎCHE

Lastly, let’s talk about the lightest fragrance you can possibly find: eau fraîche.

This type of perfume has the same concentration as aftershave and splash, and is the most ephemeral one of this whole bunch.

Its concentration fluctuates between 1% to 3%, and its longevity does not make it past the 2 hour mark.

It’s a light and fun one to try, but if you want to smell good for the entire day I would recommend skipping this one!
