Dupe Alert: ABH Modern Renaissance vs. MUR Flawless 3

Hey, pretty people!

Once upon a time, Anastasia Beverly Hills’ most popular product was the Modern Renaissance palette – and for all the right reasons!

Before the recent Subculture flop, in 2016 ABH had us all weak in our knees for their first permanent palette: soft buttery shades that blended like a dream? Yes, please!

The product was so good that it quickly became a staple in most makeup kits, including Kim K’s makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic, and the bar quickly rose up for our expectations in terms of quality when it came to Anastasia.

However, despite being one of the best palettes of the decade, the price point is still set high for most people (it retails for 42$ on the ABH website and 48.25€ on BeautyBay.com). While we can all agree that makeup is an investment, 40 bucks is still a lot!

THE DUPE

Finding a dupe for a certain product may be challenging in terms of both colors and quality; emulating such soft, buttery and easy-to-blend shades sure is, especially at the drugstore – or is it?

But what if I told you that there’s a palette that can give you those exact 14 shades – plus 18 more – for 9$ (or 9.99€)?

The british brand Makeup Revolution, recently turned into ‘Revolution Beauty’, has been duping famous makeup products for a few years. Their wide collection includes cheaper alternatives for the first 3 Naked Palettes and the Naked Heat by Urban Decay, as well as the Shade and Light palette by Kat Von D and many more.

The palette we are going to put under the spotlight today is the Flawless 3 – Resurrection; is it going to pass the dupe test? Let’s find out!

PACKAGING

Packaging plays a big part in our willingness of buying a product, that’s for sure.

ABH Modern Renaissance

ABH Modern Renaissance

Modern Renaissance’s packaging is pink and felt-feeling, with the logo and name of the company printed in gold and the name of the palette in white.  It closes magnetically and is also equipped with a mirror and a double-sided brush.

The felt may have an amazing touch but gets dirty quite easily, so it may not be the best choice travelling-wise.

The mirror on the inside is the perfect size for eyeshadows, but it would be challenging to do your whole face with it.

Lastly, I’m not the biggest fan of the brush: it is not a bad brush whatsoever, I guess I’m just not used to it.

MUR Flawless 3

MUR Flawless 3

MUR’s Flawless 3 packaging, on the other hand, embraces the rose gold trend of 2017 pairing it with a suggestive mirror-like effect.

You’ll find the company’s name printed in black on the front, while the product’s specifics are on the back. The mirror on the inside is big enough for you to do your whole face makeup with it,; the palette, however, does not come with a brush.

While the packaging is quite eye-catching, it is impossible to keep clean while using it; the mirror finish of the front will get covered in fingerprints right away, unfortunately.

PRODUCTS’ FORMULATION

ABH is a cruelty free company, like Makeup Revolution, but unlike the British brand it is not vegan.  One of the ingredients of Modern Renaissance is in fact Carmine, a bright red pigment obtained from some scale insects.

The two products share the following ingredients:

  • Mica
  • Silica
  • Dimethicone
  • Iron Oxides (77491, 77492, 77499)
  • Titanium Dioxide (77891)
  • Ultramarines (77007)
  • Manganese Violet (77742)

You can find the complete lists of ingredients either on sephora.com or anastasiabeverlyhills.com, and on revolutionbeauty.com or ulta.com.

SWATCHTES

I will point out the colors directly on the Flawless 3 palette, so you can see them more precisely! Even though the colors may not look alike in the pan, they resemble each other perfectly when swatched.

FINAL THOUGHTS

All things considered, is Flawless 3 a dupe for ABH’s Modern Renaissance – and actually worth its money? Yes, yes and yes!

The pigmentation doesn’t let you down, and nor does its blendability.  The shimmery shades need a bit more work and love, but wetting the brush or using your finger (the old-fashioned way) will solve all problems.

You still want a dupe for Modern Renaissance with less shades? I’ve got you covered, don’t worry.

The fairly new Re-Loaded Palette – Iconic Vitality by Revolution is one of the most spot-on dupes for it, and only retails for 7$ (4,99€)!  You can find it on ulta.com and on revolutionbeauty.com.

Thank you so much for reading, I’ll see you next time!
