Hey, pretty people!

I remember that when I realized I loved makeup it was through a vampy cherry shade, quite similar to Cherry On Top from Colourpop.

Lipstick were the first product that I fell in love with, and I enjoy playing around with formulas and finishes, so I was understandably drawn to this Ultra Blotted Lip as soon as I saw it online.

It was something I had seen before, but a formula that I never really got around to try. There’s always a first time, am I right?

Without further ado, let’s jump in!

PACKAGING

Colourpop Ultra Blotted Lip 'Cherry On Top' ReviewColourpop’s packagings are kind of simple and minimalistic, and yet they always manage to lowkey impress me.

Cherry On Top comes in a matte baby pink cardboard with glossy circular designs printed all over it. In true Colourpop fashion, the colors are inverted on the inside of the cardboard.

The white writings really pop on this packaging, making it easier for people to identify product’s and brand’s name right away. There are also a few general specifications on one side.

Taking the actual lipstick out, we finally get to see the bottle.

Generally speaking, the aesthetics of the actual lipstick aren’t as exciting as the outer packaging; you get your regular clear plastic bottle, your silver mirror-like cap and silver writings. Also, you get to see the color of the formula inside.

APPLICATOR

Colourpop Ultra Blotted Lip 'Cherry On Top' ReviewAs you probably know if you have checked my Colourpop Haul out, I decided to try out 4 different lip formulas out by the American brand. One thing that had me kind of baffled is that I had 4 different experiences with all the 4 applicators.

Cherry On Top’s applicator is soft yet kind of stiff; the formula isn’t meant to be swiped all over the lips, and this wand won’t let you forget that.

Size-wise, this one is pretty thin and does not have any particular thickness to it.

APPLICATION, FORMULATION AND PERFORMANCE

Colourpop Ultra Blotted Lip 'Cherry On Top' ReviewBefore proceeding, I just wanted to remind everyone that this isn’t a proper liquid lipstick formula.

The Ultra Blotted Lipsticks offer a matte finish, but their application is most definitely not a traditional one; let’s find out why.

Opposed to a regular liquid lipstick, this formula is meant to be dotted on the lips and blended it out with your fingers. This creates a softer color, while still preserving its matte finish; also, it means that you get to decide the intensity of the lipstick.

On the other hand, though, it means that precision just goes out the window. You would really need to keep a lip liner nearby to fix probable mistakes, and a bit of concealer/foundation wouldn’t hurt either.

PIGMENTATION

I swatched it how you would a regular liquid lipstick, and this is the outcome.

When it comes to pigmentation, Cherry On Top claims to be a ‘medium coverage’ lip product; I feel like this is a true claim, especially if we want to focus on one coat only, rather than two or more.

Keeping the focus on ‘one-coat-and-go’, I personally find it to be the method with the best results. The formula spreads easily, quickly and evenly, especially if you have a proper base underneath it.

A SECOND COAT

The first ‘coat’ of lipstick, completely dried

Now, things can potentially get a little bit wild when it comes to a second coat; a proper dry base is the best ally for you, which means you need to give your lipstick a little bit of time before suffocating it with a second coat. The Ultra Blotted Lip dries down amazingly fast, but I would suggest you to wait a little bit longer before intensifying the color.

Like I mentioned before, this formulation is quite different from a traditional one; this means it needs a little bit more care and attention, and also a good base.

LIP PREP

I have talked about my regular lip prep routine here, but let me give you a few highlights. The first thing you want to do is scrub to remove dead skin cells and create the smoothest canvas possible.

Once you’ve done that, I like to smother my lips in lip balm or a clear lip gloss. This not only helps re-hydrating them, but also keeps them nice and smooth.

Now, this last step can change a little bit. If you don’t like to wear foundation or concealer, you can simply blot your lips out with a tissue. On the other hand, if you do wear foundation/concealer you only need to dab a little bit of them on your lips, just like you would with the rest of your face.

LIPSTICK APPLICATION

Now that you have your canvas all ready, it’s time to move on to the lipstick. I prefer to dot a bit of formula on the center of my lips and blend it out with my finger; you will see that the lipstick hugs the lips perfectly creating a thin, soft layer of color that dries down almost immediately.

You could easily stop here, but if you wanted a stronger vibe my advice would be to wait a couple of minutes. I know that this formula seems already perfectly dry, but believe me: you won’t regret it. Waiting a little bit more will assure the formula to settle on the lips more comfortably and evenly, so that the second coat won’t settle in your dry patches.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Here we are! All in all, would I recommend the Ultra Blotted Lip ‘Cherry On Top’? Yes, I would!

If you are nervous about vampy shades or a proper liquid lipstick formula, this would be the perfect starting point.

The coverage is pretty good and adjustable, perfect if you want a softer look. It also covers the mouth efficiently, creating a perfectly even layer.

Formulation-wise, I was surprised by how thin and smooth this lipstick is. It blends out effortelessly, perfectly hugging your lips and creating an overall natural look.

If I had to pick out any flaws, I would say that it’s the application. Patting the lipstick with your finger is perfect to create that soft effect, but precision definitely goes out the window. I would suggest you not only to go quite slowly, but also keep a similar colored lip liner in reach.

Another thing I would suggest you is to wait a couple of minutes between each layer. This will allow the formula to dry completely, and the second coat won’t settle into your lines or dry patches.
